History

Lots of people ask us how Raven started. Well…
In 2004, having been involved in the Scarborough music scene for many years, both Karen and Sarah decided they wanted to sing in a band with other women. Karen felt medieval, folk, traditional and original songs would be a refreshing change from singing in shows and covers bands, and Sarah wanted to compose for women’s voices. Through friends and a variety of musical backgrounds (see our biographies for more details), Sarah, Karen, Sally, Nia, Pat and Jaye came together.

The band soon discovered the immense joy of singing and creating music together. They became firm friends. They decided on the name ‘Raven’ because it suited their style of music – mysterious, earthy and spirited, with plenty of darkness as well as light!

Eleven years, lots of CDs, many of Sarah’s and Karen’s original songs later…and Raven are still going strong. Slowly but surely their fan base has grown, along with their extensive gig list, including venues ranging from local festivals, village halls and a wedding in a field to The Stephen Joseph Theatre, Selby Abbey, Castle Howard and Grassington Fringe Festival.

Raven blend their original music with totally enchanting harmonies and infectious melodies taking you on a fabulous, fun journey through a fusion of rootsy folk, beautiful acapella, crunchy chords and sizzling salsa. Between them, they play keyboard, penny whistle, accordion, guitars, flute, congas, ukulele, recorders and percussion. Their intimate themes are inspired by love, life and nature.
